Welcome!
Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to 7th Paragon. I’ll be your Jedi Master, Mr. Larson, and I am looking forward to a spectacular year. I was born and raised just north of Colorado Springs in Franktown. I then attended the University of Northern Colorado where I received my BA in Geography/Secondary Education and a minor in History in 2010. I also became certified in Secondary Language Arts and Elementary Education in 2011. After graduating I worked for the Platte Valley School District in Kersey, Colorado driving school buses, substitute teaching, and working in the middle school computer lab. I began teaching here at The Ranch in 2012 as a middle school Paragon, Language Arts, and Technology teacher. My wife, Catherine, and I have two beautiful and energetic children; Boaz and Karah.
This year we will really be focusing on using the Common Core State Standards and the National Geography Standards to guide everything we do. This will be a very demanding year for all students as the state moves to the more challenging requirements. I am very excited at the growth that will be happening for the students and for me as their instructor. We will be using a new format of learning and teaching called Data Based Questions, or DBQs, which challenges students to look closely and carefully at primary sources and data to form their conclusions and defend their reasoning with specific evidence.
Students will be learning about the first human civilizations which began in Mesopotamia, the Indus River Valley, Egypt, and China. We will then move into the roots of western civilization with the Etruscans and Greeks followed by the rise and fall of the Roman Republic and Empire. Finally we will end the year learning about Medieval Europe and Africa.
Again, I am very much looking forward to a great year at The Ranch with all of you.
